1. What inspired and convinced you to work with Bureau CAY?
It was a possibility to design a stool for a certain goal; designing an object again after two years. The goal was clear in the beginning, so I knew what to expect from myself.
2. What part of the briefing got you excited?
The “simple” start with a design and prototype for a stool that later could evolve into a collection of furniture pieces. Also, not less important; that I could apply my own design language, the way I approach a stool.
- also, to be with a small group of 4 designers, knowing each other was a great start (although I think it would also be interesting to meet other/new to me designers.)
3. Did you find it challenging to come up with a stool concept for the first collection of Bureau CAY?
Yes ha ha, although my concept was already clear in the beginning, I started overthinking the design of it. After some complex designs I came back to my conceptual but simplistic approach of a stool.
4. How did the collaboration go with the creative facilitator of Bureau CAY?
I think well, it was also my first experience working from a given assignment, and also Cyrus’ first try out. I think this was obvious, which is not a bad thing. Even though the communication and attitude could be improved to a more professional level. In addition to that, the role of the creative facilitator could be more clear.
5. What are your thoughts of having the idea that Royal CBM is looking at your design and potentially taking it into production?
We didn’t talk about this a lot so I can not really answer. Would love to talk about this in the coming weeks and to meet some of the Royal CBM members. Perhaps it was interesting if they were involved a bit more during the process.
6. Any tips for Bureau CAY for starting the next collection?
Don’t give the designers too much stress, of course it is important to meet deadlines. Be careful with your tone of voice within communication to the artists/designers and to the outside world . Also, it might be good to clarify the overall identity. What kind of objects, style, types of designers etc.
7. What does Bureau CAY need to improve?
Communication. This could be elevated to a more professional level (read as inside communication, not the branding of the bureau).
8. Did you like to be a part of a design label and platform that represents a community of designers?
Yes, looking forward to meeting up all together and seeing each other's work. Group gatherings would be nice in future.
9. Was the timespan of the project realistic?
In the end, yes, we all designed and prototyped a stool. But, from a realistic perspective, two weeks extra would have been more relaxing.
10. Would you recommend future collaborative projects of Bureau CAY to other designers?
Yes, when there is a clear setup, expectations, deadlines etc. Also, it will be exciting to work towards an ultimate goal, direction or collaboration with a gallery or company, something that might be already planned for instance, makes the collaboration with bureau CAY more attractive.
11. Are you happy with the end result of the stool and do you think there is a potential of growing this concept?
Yes I am happy with the final result and the fact it could be applied in a collection of furniture objects.
